Welcome to Generation App

This is a guest post from Joseph D’Agnese who, with his wife Denise Kiernan, wrote The Money Book for Freelancers, Part-Timers, and the Self-Employed, which sets forth a personal finance system for people with not-so-regular jobs. You can follow them on Twitter: @The_Money_Book.

Hey you! Yeah, you hunched over the smart phone. How about giving the opposable thumbs a rest and joining the real world?

No, I’m not advocating renouncing your phone forever. (God knows, I’d be lost without my iPhone.) But I am suggesting that buying apps is financially illogical. With each purchase, you’re training yourself to do what you should never do: buy on the fly.

In short, you’re becoming a full-fledged member of Generation App.

Buying on-the-fly

iPhone 4 photo by JOrge QuinterosSome purchases alter your definition of prudent spending. Apps — those little bite-sized programs you can buy for your phone or computer — are a perfect example.

Look at it this way: When a smart spender considers a major purchase, he or she shops around, gets the best price, tests the product if possible, and inquires about warranties and guarantees before taking the plunge. If you were about to buy a book or a piece of software online, you’d read reviews. Shop for the best price. Maybe talk to a few people you trust who have used the software or read the book. Then you’d buy.

But people do very few of those things before buying an app. Why? Because Apple and its developers price apps so low that no one seems to care if they’re getting good value for their money. If the app turns out to be crap, you delete it and move onto the next app. All you’ve lost is 99 cents.

I was talking about this recently with J.D. Guess what he confessed:

I’m a perfect example of Generation App. I’ve bought a couple dozen $0.99 or $2.99 apps because they were so cheap that it didn’t matter if I ended up deleting them, which I did. And I think this is why Apple is so successful: With the iTunes store model and the App Store model, they’ve basically gone for micro-purchases, which cause little pain individually, but which can add up over the long haul.

And add up, they do.

But that’s not my chief objection to buying-on-the-fly. I hate how it subverts financial best practices, so to speak. The person who gives himself a pat on the back for stopping to pick up a penny thinks nothing of springing for a shiny, untested app. Why is it smart to save a penny one minute, but okay to discard ninety-nine of them the next? Because mobile app pricing trains us to think: “Prudent spending is the way to go for some purchases — just not this one.”

I’d argue that once you make that concession, you’re relinquishing some hard-won frugality. If $1 is trivial, what about $2, $3 or $5? That sounds like shopping momentum to me!

Resisting the urge
How do you fight back? Three ways:

So here’s what you do: Make the effort to unplug. Tell yourself that you’ll take the weekend off from technology. No screens. No high-tech.

Pulling the plug
When I do this — even for two days — I am a totally different person. An unplugged day always feels like a longer, richer day. I work in the garden. I hang with my wife. We spend time in the kitchen, and the simplest things seem like a profound act of discovery. (“Oh, so that’s what it’s like to bake a peach tart!”) If I write at all, I use paper and pencil and notice that I concentrate better.

If I don’t use my car for that weekend, and force myself either to walk or bike to my neighborhood stores to shop, I buy less — and not only because I have to carry it all back home. I buy less because I crave less. I’m getting exercise, I’m loving life. I don’t need to spend to get a consumer high. Nor am I in the grip of a twitchy, digital emptiness that longs to be filled by the next new app.

Hopefully, on those days, I’m retraining myself to commit to the things that matter to me, such as saving money and spending slowly and wisely. Come Monday, when I start fiddling again with the little screen, I hope to see the device in my hand for what it is: a tool for taking to people not in the immediate vicinity. And nothing more.

J.D.’s note: I’d like to point out another insidious way in which apps encourage spending. I call it in-app spending. iTunes is a perfect example. Sure, iTunes is free — but the music and movies are not. I can’t recall if I paid anything for my comic-book apps (because, as Joseph noted, I’ve become used to this spending), but I do know that I spend a few bucks a week to download digital comics. In-app spending is an added danger. Photo by Jorge Quinteros.

Comic Book Ad from 1956: How I Made a Small Fortune in Spare Time!

Blackhawk 105Last month, I mentioned that I got my entrepreneurial start as a kid by selling stuff door to door. This “stuff” generally comprised products advertised on the back of of comic books: seeds, greeting cards, and so on.

For more than thirty years, companies recruited armies of salesboys and salesgirls through comics. I was one of them. But it wasn’t just kids they recruited.

I was reading an October 1956 issue of Blackhawk — a fanciful war comic (the Blackhawks didn’t just fight commies; they also fought space aliens) — when I came across this gem of an ad that touts how much a man can make selling Mason Shoe.

That’s a little small to see on the blog, so you can click through to see the entire ad on Flickr. Here are some of the best bits:

Bill’s friend Jim introduces him to the world of Mason Shoe:

Look how that shoe gleams in the second panel! Naturally, Bill started selling to his friends, relatives, and co-workers. Everybody wants comfortable shoes:

And here’s the end-of-the-page sales pitch:

Mason Shoe ad

“Bill! A new toaster!”

It’s probably obvious why I love this.

For one thing, it’s an ad in comic form from inside a comic book. For another, it’s promoting one of my favorite aspects of personal finance, personal entrepreneurship. True, it veers toward the “get rich quick” side of things (but then all sales schemes like this do), but that’s okay — in order to succeed, the Mason Shoe man will have to pour his soul into his work. Finally, I’ve done plenty of door-to-door sales in my day, so I have a soft spot for this sort of thing. (It’s never this easy!)

By the way, Mason Shoe still exists, though I can’t tell from their website if they still manufacture their own shoes. It may be that they just sell other brands…

Daily Links: Packing Puzzles Edition

Kris and I are in the final stages of preparing for our trip to France and Italy. We’ve packed, the housesitter is arranged, and one of us (hint: not me) has learned a bit of French. All that’s left is for me to finish prepping the guest posts that will run in my absence. I’m waiting for one more piece to come in for October 4th, and then I have to schedule all of the reader stories, but that’s it!

My big questions now both relate to my quest to pack as light as possible:

To distract myself from these dilemmas, I’ve been reading about money elsewhere on the internet. For example, here are some of the stories I’ve found:

Jon’lethia recently wrote to share what she found in her 12-year-old’s algebra textbook: honest-to-goodness financial literacy info! An entire appendix full of the stuff! For example, here’s the section on credit cards [PDF]. Thumbs up to Big Ideas Learning for including this content in their book.

On a related note, another GRS reader (whose name I’ve misplaced) sent me this video clip of grade-school students in northern Ireland learning about personal finance:

“In Northern Ireland, personal finance is compulsory for all school children,” the report says. Bravo! (And dig those cute school uniforms!)

Kiplinger’s has an article on how to fix your 401(k). A lot of companies provide their employees with these retirement programs, but not all of them are as good as the could be. How good is yours? This article gives tips for how to tell is your 401(k) plan is up to par. Most of all, it provides tips for how to use it well to invest for your retirement.

My wife insists that I link to World Mapper, which is just what it sounds like: a site filled with world maps. But each world map is re-drawn so that the countries are sized proportional to a specific statistic. There are lots of maps covering work, income, wealth, and poverty, as well as many other subjects. For instance, here’s a map of women’s income around the world:

Women's income around the world

Finally, Len Penzo posted an interesting article describing 10 key characteristics of debt-free people (of modest means). I don’t agree with all of these — plenty of debt-free people remain materialistic — but I do think that most are spot-on. Patience, self-reliance, and self-confidence are key to getting out of debt, I think. You must take responsibility for your own financial future.

How to Use a Commitment Contract to Change Your Habits

This is a guest post from Pop at Pop Economics, a great new blog about investing, personal finance, economics, and more.

It’s now 9pm on August 30th. I’ll finish this guest post by 11:59pm on August 31. I know this, because if I don’t, I’ll lose $1,000.

Call it an incentive. I’ve written about behavioral economics over at Pop Economics for three-quarters of a year now. There are an infinite number of subjects to cover, but they all boil down to the same idea: People respond to carrots and sticks.

Commitment contracts can keep you motivated. And to make sure that I hit this guest post deadline, I gave myself a very big stick. About a month ago, J.D. and I set up a legally binding “commitment contract”. If he doesn’t get a guest post from me in a few hours, I owe a set of charities $1,000.

Crazy? Yes. But it’s also a brilliantly simple way to defeat laziness and procrastination. I’ve actually flaked out on J.D. before. Heck, I’ve flaked out on writing for my own blog before. I like the idea of building a hugely successful blog, but every once in a while, I lose the motivation to keep churning out stories.

Commitment contracts are used for all sorts of goals. In January, you decide to lose weight, but by March, the gym you signed up for is reaping the proceeds of a dormant membership you can’t break. You decide to give up smoking, but doing it “just once” while at a party leads you back to addiction.

But how likely would you be to quit if you lost $1,000 every time you skipped going to the gym or lit up a cigarette? Commitment contracts are designed to set the penalties of missing your goal so high that breaking it isn’t even an option.

How it works
J.D. and I actually entered a formal arrangement, set up through Stickk.com. Stickk is a commitment contract website with a co-founder who has studied how effective the contracts can be.

In one study conducted in the Philippines, smokers committed to quit smoking for six months. If they failed a urine test that detected nicotine, they’d lose six months-worth of smoking money as a penalty. At the end of the program, the economists found that the the contracts improved the chances of quitting by 30%, which is better than the improvement other tools like a nicotine patch gives you.

But there’s no requirement to make it as formal — and you don’t even have to set financial stakes. Another common tactic is to make the contract and let your goals and progress be known to your friends. Rather than a financial penalty, if you fail, you have to broadcast that failure to everybody. The shame itself should help keep you on track.

But no matter the structure, the contract requires three basic components:

Screwing up any of these three can doom your success.

Setting a goal
Your ultimate goal might be ambitious and far-off — like to lose 40 pounds or to become a millionaire. But the commitment contract should be for small steps that are easy to measure.

A Harvard economist recently tried different ways of paying students to improve their standardized test scores. One experiment he ran in New York, where students were paid for higher scores, completely bombed. But in a separate test in Dallas, kids who were paid $2 every time they read a book achieved significantly higher scores on the reading comprehension section of the test. It was the incentive for the small steps that got the big goal accomplished.

Likewise, make sure the goal is something you can easily control. Sure, I want to add 100 subscribers by November, and I have a vague idea of things I could do to achieve it. But at the end of the day, that’s 100 decisions to subscribe I can’t make. On the other hand, the only thing keeping me from writing is me.

Setting the stakes and the recipient
As I wrote above, my commitment with J.D. was $1,000. I set it so high because I wanted to make failure nearly impossible. Note the “nearly”. If my computer exploded, you bet I’d get to a library and finish this sucker. But if a relative died? It might actually be worth $1,000 to buy me out of it.

My penalty for not blogging twice per week is $100 for every week I miss. That’s considerably lower. So a more minor emergency, like something unexpected at work, could theoretically convince me to pay up one week rather than post. But $100 is definitely enough to keep me from heading out to the movies rather than writing.

If you just write an informal contract with a referee, you can make the recipient whomever you want. If you choose the more formal route — your Stickk contract is a legally binding commitment — you’ll have the choice between charity, an anti-charity (a cause you’re against), or an individual. With each option, Stickk takes a cut if you fail.

Picking a referee
I’ve wondered if J.D. actually thought through his commitment to referee. If I don’t turn this post in tomorrow, J.D. has committed to slapping me with a $1,000 charge. What if I begged him not to, citing all sorts of unexpected work commitments or family events? Would he cave? [J.D.'s note: Yes, I would have caved.]

Of course, the best referee won’t cave, no matter what. For that reason, it’s best to pick someone whom you trust but aren’t too close to.

You also need to make sure you and your referee are completely on the same page as to what your contract means. I wasn’t clear in my contract at Pop Economics, and that’s led to some confusion between me and my referee on what constitutes success.

Remember: It’s not a panacea
By establishing harsh penalties for failure, you’re much less likely to fail. But it’s so much easier (and more effective) to want to succeed. Getting things done shouldn’t be a constant battle between your laziness and your wallet. And in the end, economists argue that changing your wants — that is, actually wanting to eat celery instead of a cupcake — is the most effective way to accomplish a goal.

The perfect contract is one that harnesses the drive you have at your height of enthusiasm, so that at times of weakness, the financial penalty can back you up. The $100 looms over my head when I feel too tired to post on my blog. It’s not a replacement for the genuine excitement I have at building my community.

We’ll see how that goes, but so far for me, commitment contracts have kicked procrastination’s ass.

Now ask yourself this question: What could you accomplish if failure were not an option?
